What Helps You?

It all begins with an idea.

Hey! Welcome to Neurodiversity Superpowers! I’m really glad you are here. I started this project for a couple reasons. The first is that I like to learn a lot about the brain and how it works. We all have really different brains! I once heard “brains are like fingerprints”, and I think that is an interesting metaphor. We all have them, they are part of all humans, and they kind of all have the same function. On the other hand, they are as unique as they are alike. Unique or different does NOT mean “bad” or “broken”. But, sometimes schools, and places people work, and the ways that we hang out with friends are kind of built for the type of brain that many of us just do not have. It can be very frustrating to have a brain that is the best fit for YOU, but have it be measured against brains that function differently than yours. Would you have a fish and a cat compete in a swim race to see which one is faster? No way! They can both do it, but one is built for that kind of assessment, and the other isn’t. That cat needs its own unique test to highlight its strengths and skills, and to grow into the best it can become!

The second reason is that I read A LOT (all kinds of books!) but lately books about brains like mine and how they work. I wanted to share more information about what I am learning with kids like me. We do NOT have to feel bad about ourselves. We are NOT alone. We are smart, funny, strong, and worthy of support from the adults around us. This podcast will help communicate everything I am learning from my books and my conversations with kids and experts about our different brains!

I learned a lot during my work as a Time Magazine for Kids kid reporter. One of the most important things was how to be more confident in telling people’s stories. I am here to bring stories of kids just like you and me, so we have a place to connect and can build a community together. Expert grown-ups will also join the podcast sometimes to give us advice about how to feel good about ourselves and succeed.

So what helps YOU feel good and stay strong? What helps you be successful? Reach out if you want to talk to me about it! We love having guests on Neurodiversity Superpowers!
